Oscar Night

As each Oscar is announced I will post the nominees, the eventual winner and my two cents. There are going to be some shocking winners I am certain, as well as some funny moments. I will say a word or two about the fashions, the celebs, and so on and so forth.

--What a pitch-perfect start to the Oscars.
--Franco and Hatheway are off to a good start.
--"You just got Inceptioned." Haha, Alec Baldwin.
--Tom Hanks needs to be in more movies. Seriously.

ART DIRECTION:
Alice in Wonderland
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I
Inception
The King's Speech
True Grit

You have got to be kidding me! How did Inception not win this award? Inception is obviously getting a bad rap for being so amazing and inventive. Alice in Wonderland was simply awful.

CINEMATOGRAPHY:
Black Swan
Inception
The King's Speech
The Social Network
True Grit

Hooray! They got one right! Black Swan must have been a close second, but Inception deserved this one. Christopher Nolan really outdid himself, he deserves more credit for the world he created.

--I can't believe Kirk Douglas is going to out-live his son, Michael. He's doing a pretty darn good job.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS:
Amy Adams (The Fighter)
Helena Bonham Carter (The King's Speech)
Jacki Weaver (Animal Kingdom)
Melissa Leo (The Fighter)
Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit)

What a great list of women. No surprise here, Melissa Leo wins! She was one of the most unheralded actresses out there...not anymore. She just dropped a huge F-bomb....hahaha.

--Justin Timberlake is Bansky apparently. Haha.
--I'm not going to list the best animated shorts. Nobody has seen any of them and probably never will. Keep up the good work though!
--How short is that animator guy?!? Jeepers.

ANIMATED FEATURE:
How to Train Your Dragon
The Illusionist
Toy Story 3

I wonder who's going to win? Hmm...let me think. Everyone loved this film and it deserved the Oscar.

--Javier Bardem and James Brolin...what a couple studs.

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY:
127 Hours
The Social Network
Toy Story 3
True Grit
Winter's Bone

No surprise here. Aaron Sorkin's script is nearly flawless. He sure is a good public speaker. Way to go Aaron! A shout-out to Scott Rudin...very nice!

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY:
Another Year
The Fighter
Inception
The Kids Are All Right
The King's Speech

David Seidler's script is fantastic. This came as no surprise, but it had some stiff competition. He's the oldest person to win this award. Good for you, David!

--Ohh, I like this Coke commercial with "Sweet Disposition" by The Temper Trap. Great tune (it can heard on the fantastic 500 Days of Summer).
--ABC has the worst television shows. Does it not?
--Hatheway has a decent little voice on her, who knew?
--We have our first Charlie Sheen poke. A good one at that.
--Helen Mirren is still beautiful.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM:
Biutiful
Dogtooth
In a Better World
Incendies
Outside the Law

Not a surprise, it also won the Golden Globe. I've only seen Dogtooth at this point, but I'm really looking forward to seeing Biutiful with Jarvier Bardem. It looks haunting.

--Good Lord, Reece Witherspoon is gorgeous.

SUPPORTING ACTOR:
Christian Bale (The Fighter)
John Hawkes (Winter's Bone)
Jeremy Renner (The Town)
Mark Ruffalo (The Kids Are All Right)
Geoffrey Rush (The King's Speech)

A fantastic group of actors. 'Atta boy Christian! He deserved it, it's been a long time coming. He's certainly turned it down a notch, and he even got a little choked up there. Wow.

--Super 8 looks so good, doesn't it? June 10th, write that down.
--Star Wars theme song...nice.

ORIGINAL SCORE:
How to Train Your Dragon
The King's Speech
The Social Network
127 Hours
Inception

Hans Zimmer's score for Inception is simply breathtaking. Come on, you idiots! Oh well, this would've been my second choice. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are very good. Atticus Ross did another fantastic score for The Book of Eli, which is the most underrated film of 2010.

--Why is Matthew McConaughey so freaking tan?

SOUND MIXING:
Inception
The King's Speech
Salt
The Social Network
True Grit

Another one for Inception! Fantastic! It was a tight three-horse race for this award. The King's Speech and The Social Network were also mixed with perfection.

SOUND EDITING:
Inception
Toy Story 3
TRON: Legacy
True Grit
Unstoppable

Yet another for Inception. What exactly is the difference between these two awards? Haha.

--Cate Blanchett looks stunning as usual, but what's with the kitchen apron look?

MAKEUP:
Barney's Version
The Way Back
The Wolfman

The Wolfman won an Oscar? How is that even possible? What a meaningless award.

COSTUME DESIGN:
Alice in Wonderland
I Am Love
The King's Speech
The Tempest
True Grit

Two Oscars for Alice in Wonderland? That's absurd. Yet another meaningless award, no offense. Really lady? A note about your movie and Tim Burton?

--Does anyone actually listen to Randy Newman? His songs are quite shallow and pedantic.
--Tangled...yawn.
--I'm not going to do the Shorts category either. I've never heard of any of these films, if you can call them that. Keep up the good work though!
--Holy Toledo, check out this Luke Matheny (whoever that is) guy. This guys hair is quite gross.
--These song rip-offs are kind of cool. "He Doesn't Own a Shirt." Haha.
--Oprah? Really? She's irrelevant isn't she?

DOCUMENTARY:
Exit Through the Gift Shop
Gasland
Inside Job
Restrepo
Waste Land

I strongely disagree here. Either Exit or Restrepo deserve it. They're the two best docs I've ever seen. I here good things about Inside Job though.

--What's with the standing ovation for Billy Crystal? Does he really deserve that? I think not. He does look the same though, so good for him.
--Robert Downey Jr. poking fun at himself, good move sir.

VISUAL EFFECTS:
Alice in Wonderland
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I
Hereafter
Inception
Iron Man 2

If Inception didn't win I was going to flip out, because the other four nominees pale in comparison, especially Iron Man 2 (yuck).

FILM EDITING:
Black Swan
The Fighter
The King's Speech
The Social Network
127 Hours

The King's Speech isn't doing too hot at this point. This award could've went any which way, because they're all edited to perfection.

--"How to Train Your Dragon, that's disgusting." Laugh out loud.
--Good performance from A.R. Rahman and Florance Welch.
--Sorry, but Gwyneth Paltrow sucks at singing, period.
--Best original song...don't care. They all pretty much stink. Randy Newman wins, in case anyone cares. He seems like a good guy though, pretty funny.
--Nice tribute to those we lost by Celine Dion.

DIRECTION:
Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan)
Tom Hooper (The King's Speech)
David O. Russell (The Fighter)
David Fincher (The Social Network)
Joel and Ethan Coen (True Grit)

This is quite shocking. Fincher or Aronofsky should've won. Wow. This may mean that The King's Speech will win best picture. Cool story by Mr. Hooper though, listen to your mother kids. The big awards are here, buckle up.

BEST ACTRESS:
Annette Bening (The Kids Are All Right)
Nicole Kidman (Rabbit Hole)
Jennifer Lawrence (Winter's Bone)
Natalie Portman (Black Swan)
Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine)

One of the best performances by an actress I've ever seen. Black Swan is one of the best experiences and thrill-rides, and it's all thanks to Portman (and Aronofsky). I can't wait to see it again and again. This has been a fantastic speech by Natalie.

BEST ACTOR:
Javier Bardem (Biutiful)
Jeff Bridges (True Grit)
Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network)
Colin Firth (The King's Speech)
James Franco (127 Hours)

You can't really argue it at all, even though this is a great list. Eisenberg and Franco may have won if it were a different year. Firth was fantastic last year as well in A Single Man. As he put it, his career has officially peeked.

--Steven Spielberg, where you been bra?

BEST PICTURE:
Black Swan
The Fighter
Inception
The Kids Are All Right
The King's Speech
127 Hours
The Social Network
Toy Story 3
True Grit
Winter's Bone

So predictable Academy. For me the best five films of the year were The Social Network, Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception and The King's Speech. Pick one out of a hat, and I'm good with the result. Well, that's it. Thanks for tuning in! Remember to check back tomorrow for my own personal Oscars, it's called the 1st Annual You Don't Know Jack's. So long.
