40 Most Anticipated Films of 2012 (Part 1 of 4)

It feels just like yesterday that I made my 2011 predictions. Oh how the times flies. This upcoming season looks to be a rebound year for the American cinema! A lot of huge blockbusters, and a lot of big time directors are dropping some major motion pictures in 2012! Batman, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Thor and Captain America are all making appearances. James Bond is back and an Alien prequel (with Ridley Scott back as director) looks to captivate us all. Veteran directors Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino, Christopher Nolan, Noah Baumbach, Judd Apatow, Oliver Stone, Tim Burton, Wes Anderson, Ridley Scott and Peter Jackson all have new films for all to enjoy! There were a handful of highly anticipated films that I had to leave off the list, because of release date uncertainty. Sad face. Anyway, I will release ten films a day. My top ten anticipated films of 2012 will be released on Friday. Enjoy.

40. Total Recall (8/3) - Directed by Len Wiseman. Starring Colin Farrell, Jessica Biel -- This film, of course, could be a major failure. But, a seemingly solid script, a decent action director and a good cast could make for cinematic gold. Or maybe not; we shall see.

39. Silent House (3/9) - Directed by Chris Kentis, Laura Lau. Starring Elizabeth Olsen, Adam Trese -- This is yet another American horror remake, but the emergence of Elizabeth Olsen and a wonderful concept have me intrigued. The first trailer definitely doesn't have me sold, but my curiosity has certainly been peeked.

38. Wanderlust (2/24) - Directed by David Wain. Starring Paul Rudd, Jennifer Aniston -- Another run-of-the-mill David Wain (Role Models, Wet Hot American Summer), hit-and-miss comedy? Possibly, but the trailers are full of laughs and the cast looks very promising. Wain and Rudd have struck gold before, and I honestly believe this will be one of the funniest films of 2012.

37. Jeff Who Lives at Home (3/2) - Directed by Jay and Mark Duplass. Starring Jason Segel, Ed Helms -- The Duplass brothers (Cyrus, Baghead) are very funny men, and early word is that this is another comedy hit for them. Segel and Helms are both in their prime; look for this to be one of the bigger Indie hits early on in 2012.

36. Chronicle (2/3) - Directed by Josh Trank. Starring Michael B. Jordan, Dane DeHaan -- I've been fooled by these types of films before, otherwise this one would've been higher on the list. It's obviously intriguing based on the concept and the fantastic trailers, but with an unknown director and cast this film could easily be a flop. Let's hope not.

35. Bernie - Directed by Richard Linklater. Starring Jack Black, Matthew McConaughey -- We still don't know when this one will officially drop, but early screenings have everyone singing praise for Jack Black (whose had a rough go at it lately). Linklater (The School of Rock, A Scanner Darkly) is very hit-and-miss, but my money is on him hitting the mark with this black comedy.

34. The Dictator (5/11) - Directed by Larry Charles. Starring Sacha Baron Cohen, John C. Reilly -- The team that brought you Borat and Bruno are back. This could be the last chance for Cohen to finally, once and for all, strike comedic gold. His previous two films obviously had their moments, but were too spotty for my taste. This looks to be quite funny; just how funny?

33. The Cabin in the Woods (4/13) - Directed by Drew Goddard. Starring Chris Hemsworth, Kristen Connolly -- This film has been delayed many months due to some financial and 3D problems. Apparently they're finally a thing of the past. The trailer looks mildly bland, formulaic and thrill-less, but we're being told to hold our judgement. We shall see. It certainly sounds interesting, and Hemsworth (Thor) gives it some star power.

32. Jack the Giant Killer (6/15) - Directed by Bryan Singer. Starring Nicholas Hoult, Stanley Tucci -- Growing up I loved this story. Could it have been the main characters name? Possibly, who knows? I have to be quite honest; the first trailer looks pretty damn good. I'm holding judgement for now, because special effects can be deceiving. It does feature a very good supporting cast, though.

31. Snow White and the Huntsman (6/1) - Directed by Rupert Sanders. Starring Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron -- Usually not my cup of tea, but this could be a film for the youngsters out there looking for something other than Harry Potter and Twilight to cling onto. It looks to be very dark and quite tense, which has my interests somewhat peeked.

#30-21 will be released tomorrow afternoon (1/11/12).
