40 Most Anticipated Films of 2012 (Part 3 of 4)
20. World War Z (12/21) - Directed by Marc Forster. Starring Brad Pitt, Matthew Fox -- Based on the best-selling novel; this film bolsters a solid storyline, a proven director and a big time star in Brad Pitt. Apocalyptic films interest me, so I'll be checking this one out for sure.
19. Savages (9/28) - Directed by Oliver Stone. Starring Aaron Johnson, Taylor Kitsch -- This is a film that has grown on me after some details have come to light. Oliver Stone (Wall Street, Platoon) definitely adds some appeal. The star-studded cast that also includes Emile Hirsch, Benicio Del Toro, Salma Hayek, John Travolta, Uma Thurman and Blake Lively looks quite solid. The concept may be a bit overused, but I think Stone has what it takes to re-energize it.
18. Lincoln - Directed by Steven Spielberg. Starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt -- This one sounds like your typical Spielberg big blockbuster and awards contender. A wonderful cast, a terrific plot and one of the best directors in the world has me psyched for this period piece.
17. Only God Forgives - Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn. Starring Ryan Gosling, Kristin Scott Thomas -- From here on out, Winding Refn's (Drive, Bronson) films are must-sees. Especially with Gosling (The Ides of March, Blue Valentine) re-teaming with the brilliant director. Gosling himself is a must-see. The storyline sounds a little "out there," but I have no doubt that this film will be great.
16. Gravity (11/21) - Directed by Alfonso Cuaron. Starring George Clooney, Sandra Bullock -- This film may end up being the most visually breathtaking film of 2012. There really isn't a whole lot of information on this film yet, but Cuaron (Children of Men) and Clooney make this a must-see in 2012.
15. The Bourne Legacy (8/3) - Directed by Tony Gilroy. Starring Jeremy Renner, Edward Norton -- As much as I love Renner (The Hurt Locker, The Town), things definitely won't be the same without Matt Damon. However, Gilroy (Michael Clayton, Duplicity) gives this film instant credibility. And the cast (Renner, Norton and Rachel Weisz) looks killer.
14. Cogan's Trade - Directed by Andrew Dominik. Starring Brad Pitt, Scoot McNairy -- Dominik (The Assassination of Jesse James) has put together quite the cast of characters. Pitt, McNairy (Monsters), Ray Liotta, Richard Jenkins (Let Me In, Step Brothers), James Gandolfini, Ben Mendelsohn (Animal Kingdom) and Sam Shepard (Brothers) round out the amazing cast. This one is going to intense; I can't wait. Release date still pending.
13. Looper (9/28) - Directed by Rian Johnson. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis -- This film sounds like futuristic fantasy gold. Johnson (Brick, The Brothers Bloom) reunites with Gordon-Levitt, which adds to the intrigue. This film will certainly be a popcorn flick, but that's okay with me.
12. While We're Young - Directed by Noah Baumbach. Starring Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts -- Baumbach (Greenberg, The Squid and the Whale), Stiller, Watts and Jesse Eisbenberg sounds like a winning combinatin to me. There's still a ton of details to be released yet (including a release date), so there's a chance this film doesn't hit theaters until 2013; let's hope not.
11. The Hunger Games (3/23) - Directed by Gary Ross. Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson -- I'm just starting to get into the books, so I'm very intrigued to see where Ross (Pleasantville, Seabiscuit) takes this adaptation. The early trailers look good, but there's still room for speculation. I have no doubt Lawrence (X-Men: First Class, Winter's Bone) will dominate her role as Katniss.
#10-1 will be released tomorrow afternoon (1/13/12).
