Jennifer's Body (2009) R

You should not, and can not take this film seriously. It's in the horror genre, but this film is a comedy. Diablo Cody (Juno) wrote the screenplay, believe it or not. I had a good laugh when I saw that. She's obviously been fighting off some demons over the years. 'AEon Flux' director Karyn Kusama was at the helm for this odd horror flick. It has a decent little cast starring Megan Fox (Transformers, Jonah Hex), as Jennifer of course. Amanda Seyfried (Chloe, Mean Girls) as her best friend Needy, and Johnny Simmons (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) as Needy's boyfriend. This is Fox's best film by a long-shot and Seyfried is charming as usual. The film takes place in a fictional town called Devil's Kettle. The town is named after it's waterfall. But these falls actually exist in northeast Minnesota. Screenwriter Diablo Cody based the story around Devil's Kettle Falls. Which is a very unusual, and mysterious waterfall. The falls vanish into a pothole known as the Devil's Kettle and no one knows where it goes. The falls are mixed well into the story.

Jennifer is your typical, hot cheerleader whom every guy drools over. Needy is supposed to be her geeky friend, but she's equally as beautiful in real life. Which is on purpose, I think. She's got the classic glasses, ponytail, and paint-covered overalls look going on. We've seen it all before. Life seems to be going along just great. That's until they decide to have a girls night out. They go see a band called Low Shoulder at a local bar. The lead singer of the band is the always funny Adam Brody (Grind, Smiley Face). Brody has some awesome scenes throughout the film. He's rocking the eyeliner and some tribal tats. While playing their first song, a fire starts. People begin to go up in flames and the two girls and the band escape alive. Needy is in shock and just wants to go home. But Jennifer gets invited to take a ride in the bands rickety van. Great idea, right? Jennifer stays with the band, and Needy goes home.

That night, a bloody Jennifer shows up at Needy's. Only thing is, she's not Jennifer anymore. Jennifer has turned into a demon spawn who craves human flesh. What in the world happened when she got in that van? The whole town mourns the numerous deaths at the bar that night. Jennifer shows up at school as if nothing has happened. There are some hilarious scenes featuring J.K. Simmons (Spider-Man, Juno) as Mr. Wroblewski, the teacher with a hook on his left hand. Jennifer begins to lose some of her beauty and becomes weak. She soon realizes she needs human flesh to stay alive. So, she lures her high school classmates with her body and feasts.

Jennifer reveals her powers and her hunger to Needy, but she wants nothing to do with it. Needy neglects to tell anyone about her demon best friend and things get a little hairy. There is a great side-story that involves the band Low Shoulder. They write a song about the town tragedy and become famous for it. It's quite hilarious. This film has a great soundtrack featuring songs from Silversun Pickups, Cute Is What We Aim For, Dashboard Confessional, Panic At The Disco, All Time Low, and many more. And don't forget about Low Shoulder! This film is a silly, stupid, bloody mess of a film, but it's worth it. If you go in with the right mindset, this film will be enjoyable. There are some clever plot twists and a fun ending. Oh yeah, and Jennifer's body. C+
