Top 100 Films of the Decade (10-1)

Here we go, the top ten films of the decade. These are some fantastic films, that have to be seen.

10. Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002) - Directed by George Clooney. Starring Sam Rockwell.
Not a lot of people have seen this wonderful film based on the life of Chuck Barris. He made a lot of popular game shows years ago, but also claimed he was a CIA assassin at the time. Really interesting stuff with one of the best performances of the decade from Sam Rockwell.
9. Monster's Ball (2002) - Directed by Marc Forster. Starring Billy Bob Thornton.
This is a haunting film. Thornton and Halle Berry are at their very best. A tremendous and sad performance by Heath Ledger reminds us how fantastic he was. Gripping and controversial stuff here.
8. Avatar (2009) - Directed by James Cameron. Starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana.
There really is nothing like it. What an experience it was to see it in 3-D. Even on a television, this film still dazzles. Cameron poured his heart into this project and the results speak for themselves. Avatar 2 is projected to come out in 2013. Thankfully Cameron will be directing.
7. Memento (2001) - Directed by Christopher Nolan. Starring Guy Pearce.
Here's another Nolan masterpiece. This film is actually based on his brothers short story. Before the short story, which is a fantastic read, he was already writing the script. Peace has never been better. This is another film that just can not be replicated.
6. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) - Directed by Michel Gondry. Starring Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet.
This is a wonderful, creative, beautiful and sad film about love. Carrey is at his dramatic best here. Winslet is tremendous as usual. Gondry is a director to keep an eye for many years to come.
5. The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005) - Directed by Judd Apatow. Starring Steve Carrell.
The best comedy of the decade. So smart, so funny, so pathetic, so different from any movie at the time. Apatow has had his hand in over 20 fantastic films, but he's best in the directors chair. Carrell will never be better.
4. No Country for Old Men (2007) - Directed by Ethan Coen, Joel Coen. Starring Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem.
Still the best book I've ever read. And it's one of the best films ever made, thanks to the Coen brothers. Tommy Lee Jones was born for this role, as was Bardem, and same goes for Josh Brolin. This film stays true to the novel, and it works to perfection. It won best picture, and definitely deserved it. This film grew on me over time.
3. 28 Days Later... (2003) - Directed by Danny Boyle. Starring Cillian Murphy.
A zombie movie unlike any other. The last 30 minutes are heart pounding and are as good as anything ever made. Boyle is one of the best directors in the business and will continue to get better. 28 Weeks Later was fantastic, and I really hope 28 Months Later will not disappoint.
2. The Dark Knight (2008) - Directed by Christopher Nolan. Starring Christian Bale, Heath Ledger.
This film belongs to Ledger, that much is sure. But everyone involved is tremendous. Nolan has said he will only make sequels if he can make them better than the last. He certainly did that here. I can't wait until a Dark Knight sequel. Losing Ledger makes things difficult, but I'm sure Nolan will get the job done.
1. Donnie Darko (2001) - Directed by Richard Kelly. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal.
The best film of the decade. Gyllenhaal is chilling. Kelly is obsessed with time travel. And even though it didn't work in Southland Tales and was a near miss in The Box, he won't go away any time soon. The theatrical version of this film is better than the Director's Cut. It may not make as much sense, but it's perfect. This is the can't miss film of the decade.

Donnie Darko
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind
The 40-Year-Old Virgin

  1. Did you include "Law Abiding Citizen"? You maybe did, but I haven't seen it. That movie was MASTERPIECE!!! Throwing the whole U.S. constitution and judicial system into the garbage by exposing all its loop holes. Deserves a spot if it isn't in this list.

  2. It was definitely not on my list. I didn't really enjoy that film too much. Awfully predictable, poorly acted, ludicrous script and Gerard Butler is one of the worst actors of all time. It was a very average film, IMHO.
