Top Horror Films

5. Let Me In (2010) - Directed by Matt Reeves. Starring Chloe Moretz, Kodi Smit-McPhee
As good of a remake as you could possibly ask for. Moretz has already become an outstanding actress. In some ways this film outdoes the original. Regardless, this is one of the best stories ever written. Easily one of the ten best films of the year, so far.

4. Cabin Fever (2003) - Directed by Eli Roth. Starring Rider Strong.
I may be in the minority here but I don't care, I love this movie. The performances are surprisingly good, the plot is horrifying, it's actually quite funny, it makes us think and it's just an entertaining bloodbath. The sequel started promising but fell apart. Oh well, at least it wasn't as bad as S. Darko.

3. Let the Right One In (2008) - Directed by Tomas Alfredson. Starring Lina Leandersson, Kare Hedebrant
Possibly the best foreign film I've ever seen, and one of the five best horror films ever. Is it scary? No, but it's about a flesh-eating vampire, does that not qualify as horror? For those of you who are too stubborn to watch a foreign film, then see the remake, it's that simple!

2. 28 Weeks Later (2007) - Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. Starring Jeremy Renner, Rose Byrne.
I never could have imagined this film being as good as it is. 28 Days Later was so fantastic that I knew this film would disappoint me, but it didn't! Jeremy Renner is becoming a household name now, and this was his big break. I wonder which film is #1? Hmm....

1. 28 Days Later (2003) - Directed by Danny Boyle. Starring Cillian Murphy.
It's safe to say that I love this film. It's at #3 on my best of the decade list. The final half hour is horrific heart-pounding entertainment at its best. Finally! A (zombie) movie that has a realistic back-story. Boyle directed it in a way that makes it seem like you're actually there with these poor helpless souls.

  1. 28 days later and 28 weeks later rightfully deserves to be in the top two...but when I think top 5 horror films I need something as bad ass and freaky as 28 days/weeks later. Cabin Fever was more of a comedy than a horror film and I noticed you said, "I'm probably in the minority here..." during your review on it. You def. are and to put it in the top 5 is making you look like 1 in a million (in my opinion). "Let the right one in" was a pretty good foreign flick, but once again does not make the top 5. However, it should be ranked...just a bit lower. I haven't seen "Let me in" yet, so I can't so much on that one.

  2. Everyone has their particular taste in films, and the horror genre is an interesting one. Bottom line, it's hard to rank horror films now-a-days. Back in the day, a lot of films freaked me out and scared me, but now nothing does. So I basically went on which films I enjoyed the most. It's also hard to compile all the horror films I've seen (a lot). Jaws, the Aliens, Zombieland, etc. could've easily made it onto the list, but I simply forgot.

  3. Yeah, I hear ya. I figured it was more of a "your taste" list anyway, which is fine. Interesting to see though...these types of blogs are my favorite though. I love Halloween and the whole mood it puts everybody in...gotta love the horror flicks.
