Most Anticipated Films of 2011

30. Restless (3/11) - Directed by Gus Van Sant. Starring Mia Wasikowska, Jane Adams.
Van Sant's (Elephant, Good Will Hunting) films are always interesting and Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland, The Kids Are All Right) is quickly becoming a star. The trailer is intriguing enough.

29. Immortals (11/11) - Directed by Tarsem Singh. Starring Mickey Rourke, John Hurt.
Rourke (The Wrestler, Domino) is a must-see as of late. Even though this director is rather inexperienced, he's done some interesting work. This film could be what Clash of the Titans should've been. It does have a similar premise.

28. X-Men: First Class (6/3) - Directed by Matthew Vaughn. Starring James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence.
The first X-Men film was fantastic. Then, one by one, the next three got worse and worse. What makes this one different? Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass), it's that simple. And the cast looks great.

27. Thor (5/6) - Directed by Kenneth Branagh. Starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman.
I have to admit, the trailer looks awesome. Having Portman (V for Vendetta, Black Swan) on board gives it instant credibility. Branagh (Hamlet, Frankenstein) may not be a household name, but he's a talented director.

26. The Cabin in the Woods - Directed by Drew Goddard. Starring Richard Jenkins, Chris Hemsworth.
Having loved Cabin Fever, this film sounds very interesting. It's being plugged as a twisted and unusual take on the familiar "cabin in the woods" formula. Count me in! For those of you who don't know, Goddard wrote Cloverfield, as well as numerous Lost episodes. This is his first attempt as a director.

25. Moneyball (9/23) - Directed by Bennett Miller. Starring Brad Pitt, Philip Seymour Hoffman.
The plot sounds a bit boring, but I love baseball and I love this cast. Not to mention that Miller directed Capote, which also starred Hoffman (Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, Mission: Impossible 3).

24. Bad Teacher (6/17) - Directed by Jake Kasdan. Starring Cameron Diaz, Jason Segel.
Kasdan (Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, Zero Effect) is one of the best comedic directors out there. It's impossible that this film won't be funny with Segel (Forgetting Sarah Marshall), Lennon (Reno 911!), Timberlake (The Social Network) and Higgins (The Break-Up).

23. Horrible Bosses (7/29) - Directed by Seth Gordon. Starring Jason Bateman, Charlie Day.
The release date is subject to change, but it will drop next summer. The premise sounds hilarious and the cast is simply amazing. I can't wait for this one.

22. Drive (9/16) - Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn. Starring Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan.
Winding Refn (Bronson, Pusher) is a tremendous director and he has put together quite a cast. The plot sounds fresh and I'm looking forward to seeing his first American film.

21. Vanishing on 7th Street - Directed by Brad Anderson. Starring Hayden Christensen, Thandie Newton.
We're still waiting on a release date, but a trailer is already out. I'm not that big of a Christensen (Jumper, Awake) fan, but the trailer looks cool, the plot is interesting (although not fresh) and Anderson (The Machinist, Session 9) is an underrated director.

20. Don't Be Afraid of the Dark - Directed by Troy Nixey. Starring Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce.
This looks like it could be pretty freaky. There still isn't a USA release date set, but it does hit theaters in Australia in February. Having Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth) on board will help it gather some hype. The first trailer is sweet.

19. 30 Minutes or Less (8/12) - Directed by Ruben Fleischer. Starring Aziz Ansari, Jesse Eisenberg.
Fleischer (Zombieland) teams up again with Eisenberg (The Social Network, Adventureland). But more importantly, this will be Aziz Ansari's (Observe and Report, Funny People) first lead role.

18. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (12/16) - Directed by Brad Bird. Starring Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner.
My guess is that they change the name, because it sounds stupid. J.J. Abrams (Star Trek, Mission: Impossible 3) is back as producer. Brad Bird (The Incredibles) has only made animated films thus far, so this could be interesting.

17. Paul (3/18) - Directed by Greg Mottola. Starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost.
The trailer doesn't look all that great, but this film has gotten a lot of praise at early screenings. Mottola (Adventureland, Superbad) has started his career with a bang and I predict that this film will not let us down. Pegg and Frost (Shaun of the Dead) always work well together.

16. The Way Back (1/21) - Directed by Peter Weir. Starring Jim Sturgess, Ed Harris.
I'm a little surprised this film hasn't gotten more press, it looks to be epic. Weir (The Truman Show, Dead Poets Society) is a terrific director and the cast looks rock solid. Too bad it only hits a limited amount of theaters next month.

15. The Adjustment Bureau (3/4) - Directed by George Nolfi. Starring Matt Damon, Emily Blunt.
I have a feeling the trailers and the posters won't do this film justice. Damon and Blunt are always awesome and it's based on a Philip K. Dick short story! What more do you want?!?

14. The Hangover Part II (5/26) - Directed by Todd Phillips. Starring Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms.
It's going to be very hard to top the first Hangover film, without a doubt. But if there's anyone who can do it, it's Phillips (Road Trip, Old School). Phil, Stu, Alan and Doug will be back (thank God), and a whole bunch of big names will be added to the fun...Liam Neeson, Juliette Lewis, Ken Jeong (Mr. Chow) and Bill Clinton? Yep.

13. Sherlock Holmes 2 (12/16) - Directed by Guy Ritchie. Starring Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law)
There's so much to improve on, it's scary how good this sequel could be (much like Spider-Man 2). They still haven't settled on a name for this film, so stay tuned. We still don't know if Rachel McAdams (Wedding Crashers, Mean Girls) will be back, but that's not a big deal to me. One thing is for certain, Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) is on board. Hooray!!

12. Source Code (4/1) - Directed by Duncan Jones. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan.
Duncan Jones (Moon), Jake Gyllenhaal (Jarhead, Zodiac), Michelle Monaghan (Eagle Eye), Vera Farmiga (The Departed)...ahhh, I'm in! If you think it looks very similar to Next (a mess of a film), then you're right. But with a much better cast, much better director and much better plot. This film is going to rock!

11. Hugo Cabret (12/9) - Directed by Martin Scorsese. Starring Chloe Moretz, Jude Law.
This will be Scorsese's (The Departed, Shutter Island) first family film. Finally, a PG film I will enjoy! Good Lord, look at the cast. Moretz (Kick-Ass), Law (Sherlock Holmes), Kingsley (House of Sand and Fog), Winstone (The Proposition), Stuhlberg (A Serious Man), Baron Cohen (Borat), Mortimer (Shutter Island), Lee (The Lord of the Rings). Next December should be epic!
