Top 50 Films of 2010

At some point when I've seen all (or most) of the films from 2010 I will redo my list. Probably around May or June would be my guess. As we shift into another year I can't help but look back and compare this year to others. Some people think it's been a down year, and in some respects it has been. But I look at the top ten and I say it's been a pretty darn good year, especially the top seven. 2009 was an outstanding year with Avatar and 2008 had The Dark Knight. I'm going to squeeze all 50 into one post, to make it easier. Let's take a look back at the 50 best films of 2010.

50. The Runaways
Dakota Fanning (War of the Worlds, Man on Fire) has never been better and Kristen Stewart (Adventureland, Twilight) is on top of her game. This isn't Walk the Line, but it will suffice.

49. Winnebago Man
This is a hilarious documentary. For those of you who're often on YouTube, you can find the Winnebago Man quite simply. He's been proclaimed the worlds angriest man. If you don't watch the film, at least check out the YouTube clips.

48. Jackass 3D
The 3D definitely helped this third chapter move along. It's not as good as the previous two films, but it will do.

47. I'm Still Here
This film isn't easy to sit through but if you were a fan of Joaquin Phoenix (Walk the Line, 8MM) before he had his "meltdown" than you have to see it. It's amazing what Phoenix and Casey Affleck (Ocean's Eleven, The Killer Inside Me) put on the line for this film.

46. The Extra Man
One of the more pleasent surprises of 2010. Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine, There Will Be Blood) is atop his game and Kevin Kline (Orange County, Wild Wild West) has never been better in my opinion. A quirky performance by John C. Reilly (Step Brothers, Magnolia) will deliver some laughs.

45. Defendor
Woody Harrelson (The Messenger, Zombieland) delivers one of the best performances of the year in this film. I don't quite understand why this film didn't find an audience.

44. The Girl Who Played with Fire
Not nearly as good as the first film, but it's still quite good. I will finally get a chance to finish the trilogy on January 25th.

43. Valhalla Rising
One of the oddest films of 2010, but it's mesmerizing and violent.

42. The Last Exorcism
This one grew on me. It's not as scary the second time around, but it's probably better seen twice.

41. Winter's Bone
A little overrated in my opinion, but still good. Jennifer Lawrence's breakout performance is a good one.

40. The Killer Inside Me
This film was a little misunderstood I think. Either way, it's a treat to watch Casey Affleck when he's on his A game.

39. Best Worst Movie
One of the best documentaries of the year. You should see this film, whether you've seen Troll 2 or not. It's simply a treat.

38. Get Him to the Greek
The second half of this film is extremely frustrating, but the first hour is one of the best hours of the year. It's too bad.

37. Red Riding: In the Year of Our Lord 1983
This is the third chapter of the captivating British trilogy. Really great stuff! Please check it out.

36. The A-Team
One of the years best surprises. I thought this film was going to be a brainless CGI dud, but it wasn't in the least.

35. Greenberg
Ben Stiller (Duplex, Envy) unlike you've ever seen him. It's not a comedy, it is made by Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale, Margot at the Wedding), but it's well-made and realistic.

34. Solitary Man
Michael Douglas' (Wall Street, Fatal Attraction) best performance in years. So long, old timer!

33. Youth in Revolt
Highly underrated, and yet disappointing. Michael Cera (Superbad, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) is a riot, as always.

32. Going the Distance
One of the years best romantic comedies believe it or not. Drew Barrymore is always good, but Charlie Day (It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia) is the reason to give it a shot.

31. Date Night
Carell and Fey combine to make comedy gold. Probably a lot funnier than people expected.

30. Temple Grandin
One of the years best female performances comes from Claire Danes (Brokedown Palace, Igby Goes Down). A must-see, she's terrific.

29. Cyrus
John C. Reilly is unbelievably funny. The first half hour is so good and although it goes a little south in the second half it will hold your attention.

28. Holy Rollers
Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network, Zombieland) is terrific as usual. This is an interesting true story about young Jewish boys who become drug mules.

27. The Ghost Writer
Definitely not Polanski's (The Pianist, Rosemary's Baby) best, but it's a fun and thrilling ride. McGregor (Trainspotting, Stay) is on top of his game here.

26. Restrepo
This is a heart-wrenching documentary set in Afghanistan. After watching this you'll seriously question why we are over there.

25. Please Give
What a fantastic treat this film is. It's showing up all over every critics top ten films of 2010.

24. Exit Through the Gift Shop
Probably my favorite documentary of all-time. It's amazing what these artists can do with nothing more than a spray can.

23. City Island
This movie is awkward and funny. It feels real and relatable. As far as family dramas go, this one is as good as it gets.

22. The Square
This is a fantastic thrill ride with twists and turns. Bodies will hit the floor, and often. Wonderful, wonderful stuff.

21. Mother
The best Korean film I've ever seen. It starts off a little slow and is quite hard to follow early on, but it gets interesting real fast.

20. True Grit
I will have to watch this again to really grasp how good it was. One thing is for certain, Hailee Steinfeld is a star in the making. Barry Pepper (Saving Private Ryan, 61*) turns in a tremendous performance.

19. The Other Guys
One of the years best comedies, thanks to Adam McKay (Step Brothers, Anchorman), Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg.

18. Red Riding: In the Year of Our Lord 1974
This is the first chapter of the thrilling trilogy. Andrew Garfield (The Social Network, Never Let Me Go) is quickly becoming a top-notch actor.

17. The Kids Are All Right
This is a hilarious and tremendously acted film. The performances are terrific all across the board.

16. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
I seriously can't wait until David Fincher's remake due out next December.

15. Edge of Darkness
It's good to have Mel Gibson back in action. He's a terrific actor and has pleanty of years left.

14. Easy A
Emma Stone (Superbad, Zombieland) is a terrific and the supporting cast is hilarious. This is what high school films should be more like.

13. The Secret in Their Eyes
This is a thrilling foreign masterpiece with some ferocious scenes. Absolutely a must-see.

12. The Crazies
It's not often you get two terrific horror films in one year. This film is just a ball with pleanty of thrills.

11. Kick-Ass
This movie is simply awesome. It has some killer fight scenes, hilarious moments, wonderful scores and a sequel is on the way.

10. The Book of Eli
Denzel Washington is a beast in this film. This film demolishes The Road. It's not even funny.

9. Hot Tub Time Machine
This may not be the best comedy of the year, but it's the funniest film of 2010. Rob Corddry is hilarious from start to finish.

8. The Town
One of Ben Affleck's best performances ever. He also directed it, which is a bonus.

7. The Fighter
The best boxing movie ever and one of the five best sports film ever. It's that simple.

6. Let Me In
In many ways, better than the original thrilling Swedish film. You got to check this film out.

5. Shutter Island
DiCaprio and Ruffalo feed well off each other. Scorsese (The Departed, Gangs of New York) sets to mood and the payoff is tremendous.

4. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
Michael Cera's (Superbad, Youth in Revolt) best performance to date. This films rules, plain and simple.

3. A Prophet
The best foreign film ever made in my book. Give it a shot.

2. Inception
It was hard to keep this film out of the top spot. Everything about this film is epic. The score by Hans Zimmer is all-time great. Everyone has seen this film, so I don't have to persuade anyone.

1. The Social Network
The best film of 2010 is The Social Network. It wasn't too difficult a decision and I still reserve the right to change my mind but I doubt I will. Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield have now become stars.

Films I haven't seen that will most likely have a good chance at making this list: Dogtooth, Get Low, Animal Kingdom, Buried, Enter the Void, Jack Goes Boating, Never Let Me Go, The American, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, Carlos, Conviction, Hereafter, Monsters, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, 127 Hours, Fair Game, Four Lions, Love and Other Drugs, The King's Speech, Unstoppable, White Material, Black Swan, Blue Valentine, Rabbit Hole and TRON: Legacy.
