Top Actors/Actresses of 2010

I've decided to list which actors/actresses had the best year, that was 2010. We will start off with the top ten females of 2010, then move onto the males. To qualify, each actor must appear in at least one film. Being in two or two doesn't hurt. Box office success accounted for only a small percentage. Let's get it started!

10. Ashley Bell (The Last Exorcism)
We shall see if her role in The Last Exorcism, 2010's third best horror film behind Let Me In and The Crazies, will get her bigger and better roles. In many ways she outdid Linda Blair (The Exorcist).

9. Jennifer Lawrence (Winter's Bone)
Her Golden Globe nominated role in Winter's Bone has already got her two major roles in 2011 (The Beaver, X-Men: First Class). She has a long career ahead of her.

8. Gemma Arterton (The Disappearance of Alice Creed, Clash of the Titans, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Tamara Drewe)
Gemma had a huge blockbuster year. Her movies didn't really get critical praise, but she was good in all four films.

7. Michelle Williams (Shutter Island, Blue Valentine)
Michelle was tremendous in Shutter Island and she really owned her final emotional scene. I obviously haven't seen Blue Valentine yet, but she's been nominated for a Golden Globe for her role.

6. Natalie Portman (Black Swan)
We shall see if she wins an Oscar for Black Swan. I wouldn't put it past her. She already has three films scheduled for 2011 (No Strings Attached, Your Highness, Thor).

5. Claire Danes (Temple Grandin)
Her role in HBO's Temple Grandin might be the best performance by an actress this year. She seriously needs to be in more films.

4. Julianne Moore (Chloe, The Kids Are All Right)
I happen to think her performance in The Kids Are All Right deserves an Oscar (and/or Golden Globe). Chloe may not be a masterpiece, but she's tremendous in it.

3. Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest)
She's already on board for the Sherlock Holmes sequel and is rumored to star in the new Alien prequel due in 2013. She had a huge year with her Swedish trilogy.

2. Rebecca Hall (Red Riding: In the Year of Our Lord 1974, Please Give, The Town)
I had a hard time keeping Hall out of first place. She was tremendous in all three films listed above. She has a bright career ahead of her.

1. Chloe Moretz (Kick-Ass, Let Me In)
She was the only actress to star in two top-10 films. She was also in Diary of a Wimpy Kid, which I did not see for obvious reasons. She's been cast in seven films for 2011 already, including Martin Scorsese's Hugo Cabret. Also, Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall will drop in 2012.

10. Michael Douglas (Solitary Man, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps)
Douglas was terrific in Solitary Man, which was very similar to Ben Stiller's Greenberg and probably a little better. Wall Street was a bust at the box office, but it's not his fault. This may be the last we see of Michael Douglas.

9. Jonah Hill (Cyrus, How to Train Your Dragon, Get Him to the Greek, Megamind)
Jonah had his best year yet with two animated hits, an indie favorite and a raunchy comedy. Get Him to the Greek's hilarious first half was spoiled by a laugh-less and awkward last half hour. But he continues to gain momentum.

8. Ryan Gosling (All Good Things, Blue Valentine)
I have yet to see either film, but apparently he's terrific in both films, especially Blue Valentine. I don't doubt it for one second. He's one of the better serious young actors.

7. Liam Neeson (Chloe, After.Life, Clash of the Titans, The A-Team, The Next Three Days)
Liam had himself a busy 2010. While Clash was a brutal mess, I actually enjoyed both Chloe and After.Life. I get why people weren't exactly down with After.Life, but Atom Egoyan's Chloe was an emotional and well-acted erotic thriller.

6. Denzel Washington (The Book of Eli, Unstoppable)
The last 2 1/2 years have been unkind to Denzel, but he bounced back in a big way this year. The Book of Eli is easily the most underrated film of 2010. The eerie score, the fantastic cinematography, the unshaven Denzel, the crazy Gary Oldman, the awesome fight scenes, the beautiful opening scene and the thrilling final twist...it's so good, why can't anyone see that?

5. Andrew Garfield (Red Riding Trilogy, Never Let Me Go, The Social Network)
Andrew burst onto the scene in a big way. His three roles only landed him the role of Peter Parker in the new Spider-Man reboot.

4. Mark Wahlberg (Date Night, The Other Guys, The Fighter)
Mark put together one of his better comedic performances to date in The Other Guys, not to mention a Golden Globe nomination for his role in The Fighter.

3. Michael Cera (Youth in Revolt, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World)
Youth in Revolt may have been a bit of a disappointment, but Scott Pilgrim made up for it and then some.

2. Jesse Eisenberg (Solitary Man, Holy Rollers, The Social Network)
The only reason he wasn't number one was because of the huge year Leo had. Jesse's time will eventually come, without a doubt.

1. Leonardo DiCaprio (Shutter Island, Inception)
Two top-5 films will usually do the trick. Not only is he the best actor in Hollywood, he also had the best 2010. It's looking like he's taking 2011 off, much like he did in 2009. No worries, he will be back on top in no time.
